Scheduling Family Core Memories (Without the Pinterest Pressure)
Welcome back to the Lifestyle Design series! If you are a parent, you probably know the feeling. It is that deep, overwhelming desire to create a childhood full of magic for your kids, followed immediately by the exhaustion of trying to figure out how to pull it off.
We often fall into the trap of thinking memories require a certain aesthetic. You do not need a Pinterest board to create magic. Kids do not remember the perfect decor or the matching outfits. They remember the adventure and your presence.

Make It Your Own Adventure
With that said, let us add a very important reminder. This is your motherhood journey too. And of course, your fatherhood journey! If you truly love matching outfits and big decorations, you are absolutely welcome to make that a part of your adventures.
Sometimes the most fun parts of planning are the easiest things to cut out when we try to simplify. If there is a creative detail you deeply desire that makes the day special for you, make sure you make it happen. You deserve to enjoy the magic you are creating just as much as the kids do.
Automating the Chaos Allows for the Calm
The secret to being present is not trying harder. It is having a system. When the fun is actually scheduled, you stop stressing about whether you are doing enough and start actually enjoying the moment. By intentionally designing your calendar, you automate the chaos and make room for the calm.

The “1, 1, 1, 1” Scheduling Rule
Stop trying to do it all. Cramming your weekends with endless activities only leads to burnout. Instead, relieve the pressure by picking just ONE of each of these categories for the month.
- 1 Big Adventure: The core memory maker. This is your anchor event like a big zoo trip or exploring a new town.
- 1 Community Event: Build your village. Connection is key, so block out time for a moms group meetup or a library story time.
- 1 Indoor Activity: The rainy day saver. This is perfect for when those Pacific Northwest skies open up. Think epic living room forts, baking a mess of cookies, exploring a local museum, or hosting a friend play date.
- 1 Outdoor Activity: The fresh air reset. Keep it simple and grounding. Head to a local park, take a slow nature walk, or throw on some boots for puddle jumping.

Room for the Unexpected
The true beauty of this scheduling rule is the breathing room it leaves on your calendar. By only committing to four core family activities a month, you naturally leave space for all the other wonderful things that come up.
This leaves room for someone else to create the magic while you just get to make the memory. That is the big bonus of birthday parties, community events, and church events. Somebody else does the setup and tear down, and you simply get to show up and enjoy the moment with your kids. You get to protect your intentional family time while still having plenty of energy to be around others.
Presence Over Perfection
You just need a plan. By simplifying your expectations down to these intentional moments a month, you give yourself the freedom to actually show up for them.
